È la tesi che discutono gli scienziati che, ogni anno, si ritrovano a Parigi per stabilire le tipologie di interazione con le intelligenze aliene (posto che ci siano). Forse, per loro, siamo come animali in uno zoo. Forse invece ci tengono in quarantena.

Siamo soli nell’universo? È una domanda ormai datata. La risposta è scontata, dicono gli scienziati (astrofisici, biologi, sociologi, psicologi) che si riuniscono a Parigi per il congresso internazionale METI (Messaging extraterrestrial intelligence), ed è “certo che no”. Il cosmo è pieno di pianeti, miliardi di miliardi, su cui può essersi sviluppata la vita. Per cui – con un buon grado di probabilità – si può dire che gli alieni esistano, che siano intelligenti e che, addirittura, siano anche più intelligenti di noi. Resta allora il noto paradosso di Fermi: ma dove sono?

Gli scienziati del meeting discuteranno proprio di questo. Come è possibile che, pur esistendo e pur essendo più intelligenti di noi, non si siano ancora fatti vivi?

Secondo alcuni, la risposta va cercata nell’espressione “zoo galattico”. Gli alieni ci guardano, ma da una certa distanza. Aspettano che ci evolviamo abbastanza per comprendere segreti della conoscenza che per noi, al momento, risultano inimmaginabili. Secondo alcuni, anzi, ci starebbero anche proteggendo, proprio per far sì che l’evoluzione proceda naturale e senza intralci. “Del resto, quando andiamo a uno zoo e una giraffa nella gabbia si gira e ci guarda negli occhi, non abbiamo alcuna reazione. Sarebbe diverso se, con la zampa, cominciasse a battere numeri primi”.

Forse, a questo punto, conviene mandare segnali e messaggi radio sofisticati, per far sapere loro che siamo pronti.

Se la teoria dello zoo sembra pazza, quella della “quarantena galattica” lo è ancora di più: gli alieni non ci starebbero né proteggendo né osservando. Al contrario, si tengono alla larga da noi perché incontrarli distruggerebbe ogni nostro equilibrio interno. “Sarebbe un caos culturale”, spiega uno di loro.

In ogni caso, il vero errore sarebbe un difetto di immaginazione. Ogni pianeta ha le sue regole, le sue diverse leggi naturali che condizionano l’eventuale sviluppo della vita. “È sbagliato aspettarsi, come facciamo noi, che le forme di vita intelligenti dell’universo siano simili a noi. Non solo a livello fisico, ma anche a livello di intelligenza”. Potrebbe essere diversa, impensabile, strampalata. Ma per quella non serve nemmeno andare così lontano.

We are not alone in the universe, but the aliens keep away from us

According to some, indeed, they would also protect us, in order to ensure that evolution proceeds naturally and without hindrance. “Besides, when we go to a zoo and a giraffe in the cage turns around and looks into our eyes, we have no reaction. It would be different if, with the paw, it began to beat prime numbers ”. Perhaps, at this point, it’s better to send sophisticated radio signals and messages, to let them know we’re ready. If the theory of the zoo seems crazy, the theory of the “galactic quarantine” is even more so: the aliens would not be there either protecting or observing. On the contrary, they keep away from us because meeting them would destroy all our internal balance. “It would be a cultural chaos,” explains one of them. In any case, the real mistake would be a defect of imagination. Each planet has its own rules, its different natural laws that condition the possible development of life. “It is wrong to expect, as we do, that the intelligent life forms of the universe are similar to us. Not only on a physical level, but also on the level of intelligence “. It could be different, unthinkable, weird. But for that you don’t even need to go so far.
